Mamadikaya (Mango) Pappu (Dal)

Mamadikaya refers to Raw Mango in Telugu and Pappu refers to Dal, which is Toor Dal in this recipe.
This quick exotic recipe is a delicious blend of the cooked mango, cooked toor dal, green chillies and sauted onions. It is a very popular dish in Andhra Pradesh.
Tastes great as a main dish and an accompaniment too!!

This brings back great childhood memories for me as this recipe has been handed down from generations and I can very proudly say that it is a recipe from my mum’s kitchen!!

Ingredients

1 Raw Mango (peeled and chopped in quarters)
2 Small Green Chillies (slit lengthwise)
1 Small Onion (Finely Chopped)
A Pinch of Turmeric Powder
½ Cup Toor Dal
¾ Cup Water
1 Tsp Salt

For Seasoning

1 Tbs Oil
1 Tsp Mustard Seeds
1 Tsp Urad Dal
1 Green Chilli
½ Tsp Red Chilli Powder
Few Curry Leaves

Preparation

Pressure cook the chopped mango pieces and the two slit green chillies with a tablespoon of water
together with the toor dal with the pinch of turmeric powder in 2 separate dishes in the cooker
Turn the stove off after a couple of whistles
Heat the oil in a pan. Add the mustard seeds
When the mustard seeds crackles, add the urad dal, green chilli, curry leaves and fry till the dal turns slightly golden brown. Add the finely chopped onion and fry till the onions turn golden brown
Pour the pressure cooked dal, mango mix on to the seasoned onions.
Sprinkle the salt and cook for a few minutes on a low flame

The Mamadikaya Pappu is ready to be served

Note: The green chillies and the red chilli powder used in this recipe may vary depending on the individual’s taste buds. Onions in this recipe is optional. It tastes as delicious even without the onions.
